I want a new computer for photography- preferably Mac?

I’m very interested in photography, and I need a new computer. I’d like it to be a desktop computer since I already have a laptop.
Could anyone tell me the advantages of having a Mac when you need a computer to help with photos?
I was thinking about the iMac- can you tell me the advantages and disadvantages of this computer?

The only advantage to a Mac is the operating system which is much more stable and handles resources such as memory better. Other than that it downhill all the way.

They are much more expensive performance for performance than a PC. The proliferation of PC’s has meant that many companies supply key components independently which means much lower price. With a Mac your tied into one manufacturer, good quality, but charges the earth.

I do have a Leopard system and I hate it, I hate things that think they know best and work the way they want to rather than the way you want to work.

iPhoto is a classic case of terrible software, you can think you’ve deleted something then find months later the same picture turning up all over the place, because it assumes you didn’t really want to delete it.

There’s the classic case of the CD/DVD reader writer that fits beautifully in the screen, if it needs replacing it £300.00 (£20.00 for an equivalent one for the PC) on top of that it can’t play mini-discs. You keep coming across this design over function time and time again. The single button mouse which makes using them a two handed job. I ask you!!!

When using Photoshop the background remains transparent which can be very confusing when you find you’ve been working on the picture behind and not the one you thought you had. Yes you can change that, but within a week the Operating System will change it back as it’s sure you didn’t really mean to change it – yes I did, that’s why I did it !!!!!

There is loads of free software for the PC, very little for a Mac, want an AV program for making slide shows with animation and zooming into the picture? Your spoilt for choice on a PC. All good, all around £50.00, With a Mac you have the choice of one, not very good, costs a few £100′s, or buy the full Photoshop Suite about £1500.00 if you want a better one. There are things you can do on a PC such as program PIC chips and other electronic stuff that is impossible on a Mac the software just isn’t there.

As you’ve gathered I don’t like Macs. Save alot of money get a better specced PC for half the price, yes you will need Anti Virus (free from AVG) Yes it will fall over from time to time, but so will Macs except when they do they freeze and the only way to get working again is to re-start. At least XP just closes the program the Operating System keeps running.

One final point don’t get Vista insist on XP. XP hasn’t got the ‘bells and whistles’ that take up so much of the computers resources, but it is the most stable system Microsoft ever produced, it isn’t perfect, but it is the best that we have got to work with.

Sorry for the rant.

Where/how can I find a power cord for a Sony Vaio laptop?

I have a Sony Vaio laptop. I lost the power cord (the cord that connects to the adapter and the wall). I still have the adapter. Where can I purchase JUST the power cord? I live in canada (in British Columbia), so I can’t order it online from the US website (which just ships to places in the US), and so far I haven’t found anything similar on the Canadian website. Thank you!
I found somewhere on the Canadian website to order the adapter, but I don’t need that, I only need the power cord, and I don’t want to pay the extra amount for the adapter. Site: http://www.sonystyle.ca/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/CategoryDisplay?storeId=20153&catalogId=100803&langId=200&accessory=true&categoryId=1001105&N=4294960371

If you ever wanted a top quality product, http://www.topmic.com/ has them and they’re wondering.However if you are outside of the US, they do charge extra for shipping. If you would REALLY prefer to not purchase from the US, ebay has them. Read carefully because some only sell the power cord and some only sell the adapter. Some have both.

So good luck and have fun charging!

Latest LG Xnote P300 Laptop With LED Backlit Display

We spotted the P300 last December when it was scheduled for its launch in Korea, but LG has finally done the decent thing and brought it across to Europe. In the process it has also given the specs a decent upgrade, possibly making LG’s the 13.3in notebook to have, until every other manufacturer makes similar refreshes to its lines. The upgrades in question see the processor upped from a 2.4GHz T7700 to a similarly clocked T8300 Penryn chip, hopefully offering better battery life and performance. System memory is up to 3GB, with an unspecified NVIDIA graphics chip, most likely a GeForce 8400M, providing graphics acceleration.

Build and Design

The LG P300 is a slim and compact design that could fit very well with the Mac book Air and ThinkPad X300. The notebook is very thin, and has no bloated plastic to round out edges or even out parts of the chassis. The screen bezel is very thin, with the overall LCD section being no more than a few millimeters thick. In terms of design it looks and feels a lot like a Fujitsu business grade notebook, not counting the colorful “red wine” lid design which looks a bit like a violet zebra.

Build quality is nothing short of top notch. The chassis feels extremely rugged, with no flex or sagging anywhere but the thin LCD lid. The main body and keyboard surround is metal alloy, and the LCD frame is sturdy black plastic. One thing some advanced users will notice from the pictures is this notebook lacks any panels on the bottom for RAM, CPU, or HD access, which is instead located under the keyboard. In some ways the solid bottom section does reduce flex and creaking which might come from separate panels rubbing against each other when carrying the notebook around.

Speakers

The speakers on this notebook were more than adequate for listening to music, watching a movie, or playing video games. Treble and midrange was clear, and like the majority of notebooks bass was completely lacking.

The headphone jack provided clear and hiss free audio, making it a perfect alternative for private listening.

Performance and Gaming

The power of this 3.6 pound notebook was nothing short of phenomenal. With a 2.4GHz Penryn processor and NVIDIA 8600M GS this thing screamed compared to anything else in this weight range. I could play Portal at native resolution and at medium settings and have enjoyable frame rates. One performance enhancing item I did not see on this notebook was a 7200rpm drive, but the system performed well enough where that downside was glossed over.

The panel is still the same 1,280 x 800, LED-backlit affair seen elsewhere, so no improvement there, and making up for the lack of a built-in DVD drive; a USB-powered model is bundled. Weight wise the LG P300 keeps itself less than 1.7Kg, which while not Toshiba R500 levels of lightness is certainly not going to cause undue strain to anyone carrying the system around regularly. Oddly, the P300 isn’t showing on LG’s UK site quite yet, but will hopefully be rectified soon. Price wise the rest of Europe will be forking out €1,599 which is in line with similar systems.

This notebook has the following specifications:

* Intel Core 2 Duo T8300 (2.40GHz/ 800MHz Front Side Bus/ 3MB L2 cache)

* Windows Vista Home Premium 32-bit

* 2GB DDR2-667 dual-channel RAM (2 x 1GB)

* 13.3″ WXGA (1280×800) Glossy

* Nvidia GeForce 8600M-GS graphics card with 256MB dedicated memory

* 250GB Fujitsu 5400rpm Hard Drive

* No Internal Optical Drive, External USB DVD-RW Drive included

* Intel Wireless Wife 4965 AGN (802.11a/g/n)

* Bluetooth 2.0+EDR

* Built-in 1.3 mega pixel web cam and microphone
